The Sustainable Policymaking Index evaluates both the need for reform and the extent of current reform efforts across key policy areas in each country. The index draws on leading concepts from the current international discourse on how to measure sustainability, social progress and quality of life. As such, the index goes beyond incorporating economic metrics that measure the material wealth of a society. It also captures performance in critical policy areas, essential to ensuring the long-term viability of economic, social and environmental systems.

The Sustainable Policymaking Index measures the performance of 30 countries across the three core dimensions of sustainability concept – economic, social and environmental. These dimensions are mapped to 20 policy fields, which are evaluated using combination of quantitative and qualitative data. Topics include circular economy initiatives, sustainable education policies and measures to protect the climate and biodiversity.

All data, rankings, and detailed country reports can be accessed free of charge via the project’s interactive website (http://www.sgi-network.org).
