Reinhard Mohn Prize 2018:
Living Diversity – Shaping Society
German society is culturally diverse – and has been for quite a while. Several different religions, traditions and languages have long been an integral part of our country. Diversity is a lived aspect of normal day-to-day life in Germany. And while living in cultural diversity presents on the one hand challenges, it also involves opportunities. In order to ensure mutual benefits in the exchange of different perspectives while making diversity a source of societal strength, we must pro-actively shape the conditions in which diversity is experienced.
Religious, cultural and linguistic diversity has always been a reality in Germany. Yet determining what constitutes success in terms of dealing with diversity on a day-to-day basis is a matter often subject to debate. Our publication accompanying the Reinhard Mohn Prize 2018 offers insight into how Germany can effectively target living well together in a multicultural society marked by social inclusion and respect for diversity.

Cities have always been the site of interaction among people with different identities, lifestyles and customs. And they have always attracted migrants – from rural areas or other countries. The study offers an overview of the state of research on living together in culturally diverse cities.
Abstract: The Diversity Factor
Cultural diversity offers valuable opportunities – such as helping companies increase their innovative power. The executive summary of our recent study details its key findings on the positive impact cultural diversity can have on innovation and gives recommendations as how to use its potential.
