Description

Ahead of the 2026 U.S. midterm elections, a new joint study by the Bertelsmann Stiftung and the Bertelsmann Foundation North America points to support on both sides of the Atlantic for pragmatic cooperation on shared interests and a more independent Europe. Trust remains profoundly unequal: Europeans are half as likely to consider the U.S. trustworthy as Americans are to trust Europe. Yet, majorities on both sides favor deeper EU-U.S. ties, while Canada leads preferences for stronger future partnerships.

Cover Building European Resilience and Security

Europe is entering a new era of global uncertainty. Our project develops sound analyses and recommendations to help the EU strengthen its resilience and security – by building new partnerships (i.e. with the UK), deepening ties with Ukraine, positioning itself geopolitically between the US and China, and engaging cooperatively in the MENA region. In addition, we put forward proposals to reinforce Europe’s resilience, with a particular focus on civil protection, critical digital infrastructure, and economic security.
