Video: Transformation Index BTI 2020 – Quality of democracy, market economy and governance at a new low

The quality of democracy, market economy and governance in 137 developing and transformation countries has continuously fallen over the past ten years and reached a new low. This is the result of the Transformation Index BTI 2020 , whose most important findings are summarized in this video by Hauke Hartmann, Senior Expert at the Bertelsmann Stiftung.

The dismantling of the rule of law and participatory rights is particularly striking in once stable democracies such as Brazil, Hungary, India and Turkey. The BTI 2020 also observes increasing social inequality, poor economic performance and overindebtedness in many countries. According to Hauke Hartmann, COVID-19 will accelerate these negative trends and threaten to have a devastating impact on the most vulnerable members of society.
