On the 16th of July 2019, the European Parliament elected Ursula von der Leyen as the new president of the European Commission, placing in her hands the reins of Europe’s executive institution for the next five years. Von der Leyen, whose candidacy had been marked by controversy because she was not one of the candidates (Spitzenkandidaten) earmarked by political groups within the European Parliament, became the compromise candidate in a period of growing political fault lines among member states.
