The study, which was carried out by a consortium of researchers from the University of Utrecht and the Austrian Institute of Economic Research, shows that there is untapped potential for European regions to collaborate on technological innovation for the twin transition. Europe’s wealthiest regions demonstrate a high patent output especially in cutting edge digital technologies. But other less developed regions also show strengths in less complex green technologies and in some complex digital technologies. Our study identifies which regions have high levels of complementarity to combine their strengths and develop new twin transition technologies, which can foster economic diversification and growth.
