Currently, the EU is involving citizens in European policy development in an unprecedented way. In the "Conference on the Future of Europe", citizens discuss with politicians the EU’s policy priorities through new forms of citizen participation. Together with other foundations and think tanks, we observe and accompany this year-long conference. Based on our analysis, we develop our own proposals for the EU’s participatory and democratic future.
In our series "Conference Conversations", a 60-minute interactive online talk show, we bring together experts, conference insiders and high-ranking guests. In our fourth edition, we discuss the state of democracy in Europe and new forms of citizen participation in the EU. Should we be worried about the state of democracy in Europe? Is the Conference a suitable instrument for the further development of the European Union? What are the chances that the recently launched citizens' panels will lead to real changes and reforms in the EU?
Herman Van Rompuy, together with Brigid Laffan, Professor Emeritus of the European University Institute, Janis Emmanouilidis of the European Policy Centre and Dominik Hierlemann of the Bertelsmann Stiftung will discuss these issues on September 28, 2021 11:00 AM (CET).
