With “Neue Stimmen,” the Bertelsmann Stiftung opens up a great opportunity for talented young vocalists from across the world to realize their dream of a singing future.
Liz Mohn, president of the International Singing Competition “Neue Stimmen,” always manages to bring both internationally renowned jury members and many prominent figures from the international opera scene to Gütersloh, along with celebrities from film and TV. Singers who manage to enchant this audience of experienced stage performers can be confident in their own chances at a career in opera.
The “Neue Stimmen" competition itself has a history spanning a quarter of a century: Liz and Reinhard Mohn created the competition together with Herbert von Karajan and August Everding. The objective of promoting young talent and helping them achieve an international career has been achieved, as a glance at the list of participants from years past demonstrates.
More than 40 selected young vocalists travel for the final to Gütersloh, where they present themselves to an international jury. The committee of experts is composed of artistic directors from large opera houses, music professors, internationally-renowned chamber singers and music critics. The finalists face jury members with high standards, but at the same time get to know the most important representatives of the world of opera and can thus make their first contacts with the large opera network.
The grand finale presents a unique opportunity to young singers is: The best singers from the final week present their arias here during the “normal operation" of an opera house. In the Stadthalle Gütersloh, in front of a large audience and accompanied by a symphony orchestra, the appearance is a very different challenge to presentations with piano accompaniment in the rehearsal room. This makes it possible to see who has not only an outstanding voice but also stage presence and acting ability.
