NEUE STIMMEN 2024: Application phase for 20th international singing competition begins

Young opera singers have from tomorrow until January 31, 2024 to apply to compete in the international singing competition organized by the Bertelsmann Stiftung's Liz Mohn Center. The final round of NEUE STIMMEN's 20th edition will take place in October 2024.

Europeans want decisive action against disinformation on the Internet

More than half of all EU citizens doubt the truthfulness of the information they find online. Recognizing false content and actively responding to it is easier for the young and the educated. Almost nine out of ten Europeans feel tech companies and policymakers both have a responsibility to combat disinformation.

Enormous support for cultural offerings in Germany

91 per cent of people in Germany believe it is important to preserve the cultural offerings in theatre venues for coming generations. Such is the finding of the new Culture Relevance Monitor of Bertelsmann Stiftung's Liz Mohn Center. However, four out of ten young adults feel that cultural offerings do not cater to them. They feel out of place in these venues. Decision-makers in cultural and political institutions should modernise cultural offerings and the way they are communicated in order to do justice to the relevance the population attributes to their work.

Daniela Schwarzer appointed to Bertelsmann Stiftung Executive Board

Daniela Schwarzer has been appointed a member of the Bertelsmann Stiftung Executive Board. The political scientist previously led the work of the Open Society Foundations in Europe and Central Asia as Executive Director. Prior to that, she was director of the German Council on Foreign Relations (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Auswärtige Politik, DGAP). Together with Executive Board Chairman Ralph Heck and Board Member Brigitte Mohn, she will oversee the work carried out by the nonprofit Bertelsmann Stiftung.

Strengthening European unity in times of crisis

In these challenging times, the Bertelsmann Stiftung is committed to promoting European unity. The European Union has responded decisively and stood together against Russia’s war of aggression. The majority of Europeans support this course. Those are the findings from current studies carried out by the Bertelsmann Stiftung which were presented at the foundation’s annual press conference in Gütersloh. Through its work, the Bertelsmann Stiftung aims to strengthen this position among Europeans and promote democracy. It is also continuing its efforts begun last year to assist people from Ukraine.

Support for Ukraine is declining slightly

One in two people in Germany and the United States want a better-functioning democracy
