Description
The complexities of social, political, and economic landscapes in Latin America pose both challenges and opportunities in countering disinformation. Shared language fosters communication yet exposes vulnerabilities to coordinated disinformation campaigns leveraging cultural references. Structural obstacles, including state-driven media bias and poor journalistic conditions, compromise media independence. However, civil society alliances showcase collaborative potential in mitigating disinformation's impact. This report analyses challenges specific to Latin America and presents four case studies illustrating the different roles civil society plays in the region. In addition, the authors from ADC (Argentina) identify key disinformation trends and stress the need for a multi-faceted approach to countering disinformation. In conclusion, the report outlines recommendations for different stakeholders and underscores the shared responsibilities of all of them.
This report is part of an international research series conducted under the theme “strengthening democracy, countering disinformation”, commissioned and supported by the Upgrade Democracy team between 2023-2024.
