Die EU und Japan sind wichtige Wirtschaftspartner. Seit 2013 verhandeln sie über ein bilaterales Freihandelsabkommen. Beide Seiten könnten hiervon profitieren. Wichtiger als der potenzielle BIP-Zuwachs ist jedoch die strategische Bedeutung eines solchen Abkommens: In Zeiten von Brexit und Trump wäre es ein klares Bekenntnis zu wirtschaftlicher Kooperation und freiem Handel.
