Integration through Education: Carl Bertelsmann Prize 2008 – Education Leeds: Standards for improved integration

Making learning fun is one of Education Leeds' many innovative ideas. It is a non-profit organization responsible for the education on behalf of the city.

With a population of 750,000, the City of Leeds is the second largest local authority in England. About 110,000 students attend state-maintained schools in Leeds. 18 percent of these students belong to an ethnic minority. Education Leeds was founded as a not-for-profit, private education agency wholly owned by Leeds City Council in 2001, after a very negative Ofsted report in 1999. Since then, the test results for students at the age of 16 improved by 40 percent. Deprived students performed markedly better as well.
