Dear Readers,

How would you fund more European defence and innovation without increasing national contributions? Would you cut agricultural support, regional funding—or something else? These are the uncomfortable choices behind ongoing negotiations over the EU’s next long-term budget.

Our new EU Budget Navigator, developed by our budget expert Anna Heckhausen, lets you work through these tough choices yourself. Compare competing proposals, see how funding priorities could shift, and use the Scenario Calculator to build your own 2028–2034 budget. More spending in one area means finding additional resources or making cuts elsewhere. The tool turns an often impenetrable debate into concrete decisions, making it easier to judge whether political promises add up. Try it and see where your own priorities lead you.

Elsewhere in this edition, Andreas Pinkwart argues in a Handelsblatt op-ed for deeper integration to unlock Europe’s growth potential. On the CER’s Unpacking Europe podcast, Claudia-Dominique Geiser discusses how to finance and scale innovative companies. Brandon Bohrn explores in Focus how closer EU–Canada ties could strengthen Europe’s geopolitical position.

Finally, our public opinion platform eupinions has a refreshed website and new trend data from its August survey wave—another opportunity to look beyond the headlines and explore what Europeans think.

Best wishes,

Malte Zabel

Op-Ed | Europe’s Untapped Growth Potential

Europe has the research, companies and market size to compete globally, but barriers within the Single Market continue to hold it back. In Handelsblatt, Andreas Pinkwart argues that Germany should support deeper European integration, stronger capital markets and joint investment rather than blocking reforms that could boost growth and competitiveness.

Podcast | Unpacking Europe: Scaling Innovation in Europe

Europe produces innovative startups, but too many struggle to grow and access the capital they need. On the Unpacking Europe podcast, Claudia-Dominique Geiser, James Green and Marlene Schörner discuss how stronger public equity markets could help companies scale in Europe and strengthen the continent’s competitiveness.

Interview | "This is a special message to the US, China and Russia"

Ursula von der Leyen has proposed closer EU ties with Canada through a new form of “associate membership”. In an interview with Focus, Brandon Bohrn explains how deeper cooperation on defence, technology, energy, and critical raw materials could broaden Europe’s partnerships and send a geopolitical signal to the U.S., China and Russia.

eupinions has a Fresh New Look

You probably know our platform for European public opinion, eupinions, which collects representative data across all EU Member States to track views on political issues and megatrends. It now has two new updates: its trend data now include the latest survey wave from August, providing an up-to-date view of European public opinion. The project website has also been refreshed with a slightly updated look.
