CHINA POLICY

Transatlantic China Policy

As the Biden administration gets to work, Bertelsmann Foundation takes a look at the pressing challenges in need of Euro-American alignment. The China challenge is on top of the agenda of policy makers on both sides of the Atlantic. Bernhard Bartsch argues that although the Trump administration has been a stress test for transatlantic relations, the last four years have also been a period of remarkable convergence in views toward China. Read our recommendations for a transatlantic China policy here

ESSAY SERIES

The Great Disillusionment

“Repression at home, aggressiveness in diplomacy: China's authoritarian turn backwards demands new European responses”, writes journalist and author Matthias Naß in his contribution to our series "The New Systemic Conflict - What Decisions Germany is Facing". In his view the conflict with China is not a competition for the superior model, but a classic great power conflict involving the distribution of political and economic power, military strength and cultural influence (in German). Read it here

POLICY BRIEF SERIES

Indo-German Alignment Mapping - 1. Security

What are the prospects of the strategic partnership between Germany and India? Often, we see that mutual statements about its infinite potential characterize the Indo-German relationship. At the same time, the discussion very often remains merely a theoretical exchange. Where are both partners really on the same page and where are their respective pain points in cooperation in relevant economic and political areas that may prevent a successful partnership? In the first chapter of the upcoming Policy Brief series, Parvati Vasanta takes a closer look at the area of security (in German). Read it here

LITERATURE REVIEW

Cold War 2.0? Essential Readings on the New Systemic Conflict

What lies ahead for U.S.-China relations, after the inauguration of President Biden? What are the prospects for transatlantic cooperation towards China after the conclusion of the Comprehensive Agreement on Investment (CAI)? These issues are addressed in the new edition of our monthly literature review on the systemic conflict with China. Another focus is on China’s economic strategy of “dual circulation” and its intensified efforts to promote its authoritarian model at home and abroad. In addition, we have compiled contributions on technological competition considered by many observers as the new epicenter of geopolitics. Read the complete literature review here

REPORT

Dealing with China on high-tech issues - Views from the US, EU and like-minded countries in a changing geopolitical landscape

What opportunities and challenges exist for the US, the EU and like-minded partners in Asia to address the shared challenge of a stronger and more assertive China? This report by the Clingendael Institute in the Netherlands adopts an ‘outside-in approach’ to discuss, presenting views and suggestions by experts from six countries: the United States, Germany, France, Japan, India and Australia.
