Despite strong economic demand, fewer managers in Germany feel that the jobs in their company are secure and that performance is being appropriately compensated. According to the twice-yearly survey carried out by research institute FKI on behalf of the Bertelsmann Stiftung, only 79 percent of the participating executives say the jobs where they work are secure, compared to 84 percent last year. And while 57 percent believe that the remuneration, both monetary and non-monetary, offered by their company is appropriate, 62 percent felt this was true in 2012. In addition, two out of three German managers say that their employer does little or nothing to help them develop professionally, the same figure as last year.]]>

Germany profits considerably from the Euro, as a current model calculation of Prognos AG shows that was drawn up on the order of the Bertelsmann Stiftung. "Germany's membership in the currency union reduces costs for international trade and protects it from strong exchange rate fluctuations," Aart De Geus, chairman and CEO of the Bertelsmann Stiftung, said.]]>

The foreseeable change in the European Treaties provides think tanks with the opportunity to actively shape the future of the European Union. During the opening of the Brussels Think Tank Dialogue 2013, the Chairman of the Bertelsmann Stiftung, Aart De Geus, emphasised, "The next European Convention will, in two or three years, provide the think tanks with the opportunity to participate in the debate of the future of Europe". The US economy is back to form, but domestic political gridlock, volatile job numbers and shaky financial markets threaten to unravel the recent success story. On the other side of the Atlantic, the eurozone has overcome its existential crisis, but the path to future growth and further fiscal and monetary integration is unclear. And the trans-Atlantic partners could improve their fortunes by seeking closer cooperation on issues such as free trade or global financial governance, according to the participants at the 5th annual Bertelsmann Foundation-Financial Times conference, held in Washington, DC on April 18, 2013.]]>

A survey of 120 stakeholders in the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) negotiations reveals that 88 percent believe the US and the European Union (EU) will come to an agreement on expanding their economic ties. But the overwhelming optimism is qualified. Only 37 percent of those surveyed foresee a "broad" agreement; a slight majority of 55 percent forecast a less comprehensive "moderate" pact. The results are included in a 10-page report released today at the 5th annual Bertelsmann Foundation-Financial Times conference.]]>

Most OECD states maintain their wealth and prosperity at the expense of their children and succeeding generations. Those are just some of the findings from an international study carried out by the Bertelsmann Stiftung on intergenerational justice in 29 OECD member states.]]>

EU member states must make a vigorous effort to fight corruption if they want to find a way out of the current crisis. That is one of the findings of a study conducted by the Berlin-based Hertie School of Governance. The study was presented to the European Parliament on April 9, 2013, by Hertie researchers and experts from the Bertelsmann Stiftung's Brussels office. The study shows which EU member states are most prone to corruption, which have been the most successful in combating it and which strategic responses are the most effective. It also shows that more is required than just eliminating sources of corruption and increasing transparency. As experts from Italy, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria and Slovakia attest, an independent judicial system has a key role to play in exposing corruption, as do civil society and the media. These conclusions match findings from the Bertelsmann Stiftung's Transformation Index (BTI), whose evaluations of EU member states in Eastern Europe were used for the study.]]>

The Bertelsmann Foundation presented "Surviving A Debt Crisis: Five Lessons for Europe from Latin America", a study by Samuel George. The report looks at Latin America during its financial crises in 1982-1989 and 2001-2002 and offers Europe an opportunity to learn from that region's experiences during those fraught economic times. The paper provides recommendations to prevent a repetition of missteps that would only prolong the problems in the eurozone periphery.]]>

South Africa, host to this year's summit of the emerging BRICS countries in just a few days time, is not a model for sustainable development on the African continent. That is to say, the country, in contrast to Brazil for example, has not made convincing social progress in important areas, such as education, health, social inclusion and unemployment, whereas other African countries are catching up and becoming more attractive to the BRICS countries. This is the conclusion reached by an international comparative study of the BRICS countries by the German Bertelsmann Foundation.]]>

What kind of policy will China's new leadership under Mr. Xi Jinping pursue? This question has been much discussed in the international community since Xi's rise to power in November 2012.  In the past four months, Xi has presented himself as a reformer in the mode of the late Mr. Deng Xiaoping. Rarely have so many youngsters taken part in a policymaking decision: between 87 and 93 percent of the students at the four secondary schools in Rietberg near Gütersloh voted to determine what will happen with a portion of the funds made available to their schools by the city. Last Thursday the students presented their ideas to local policymakers, and the city's Schools Committee then unanimously approved spending on a range of items, including new lockers, meeting rooms and punching bags. The situation in Syria at the beginning of 2013 could hardly be worse. Dead, wounded, refugees, a humanitarian disaster. President Assad is destroying his country and waging war against his own people. Russia and Iran back the regime. The West wants regime change without intervening militarily.
