The Brussels Office of the Bertelsmann Stiftung

The Brussels office of the Bertelsmann Stiftung, one of Europe's largest private foundations, was established in 2000. The office is located at Schuman, in the heart of the EU district and close to the European institutions.

As a think tank in Europe's capital, we contribute to the development of an integrated Europe that is built on the values of freedom, humanity and solidarity. The focus of our work is to advance Europe's potential as a global player in foreign, security, economic and social policy. We analyze worldwide policy approaches and apply lessons learned from them to help Europe realize its vision of a "Union of Member States and Citizens".

The Bertelsmann Stiftung's Brussels office promotes transnational debate about future challenges facing Europe and its citizens. We provide European institutions, think tanks and media with key findings of our project work. Our work is based on the early detection of upcoming international developments that impact Europe and influence the Stiftung's worldwide agenda.

The Security Jam

Logo Security Jam

The Security Jam, 4-9 Februar 2010

At the end of the first decade of the 21st century, it is clear that global security challenges increasingly embrace such widespread issues as Climate Change, Human Rights and Development. This has prompted major stakeholders to look beyond conventional means of ensuring input- and has led to the European Commission and NATO joining together to back a worldwide online brainstorm called the Security Jam, held online between February 4th and 9th 2010.

Co-organised by a group of leading think-tanks, the Security & Defence Agenda, Chatham House, The Atlantic Council of the United States, the Global Humanitarian Forum, the Open Society Foundation, SIPRI, Carnegie Europe, CIDOB, Fondation pour la Recherche Stratégique, Bertelsmann Stiftung, the Geneva Centre for Security Policy, Friends of Europe, and in collaboration with IBM, the Munich Security Conference and Europe's World, the Security Jam was designed to allow several thousand representatives and experts from around the globe take part in an online debate on key issues that govern our safety and development.

At a first meeting in the middle of January participants had discussed the need to go beyond the current GDP-related growth paradigm and to develop a more comprehensive and sustainable understanding in which ways future economic models should contribute to human well-being. The second meeting focused on the question of how to increase the political impact of measurement tools aiming to capture and assess sustainable development in our changing world. During the final panel, the participants focused on possible implications of alternative concepts of well-being on the EU's future growth and sustainability strategy.

Diplomacy, Development and Defense: A Paradigm for Policy Coherence

The end of the Cold War radically changed both classic policies of national and collective security and international strategies for conflict management and the stabilization of precarious states. The threat of Islamic extremism and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have shattered any illusions of a peace dividend and have given strategies against state failure a new urgency.

Sustainable Governance Indicators 2009

Despite the limiting effects of growing interdependencies in a globalized world, national governments still have a considerably broad scope of action when it comes to ensuring sustainable policy outcomes. The key question is, however, to what extent governments can identify, formulate and implement effective reforms that render a society well-equipped to meet future challenges.
