How to capture and assess well-being in a changing world

Panel Debate in the European Parliament

On February 3rd, the Bertelsmann Stiftung and the World Future Council (WFC) jointly held the second out of a set of three debates in the European Parliament dealing with the issue of "Rethinking Well-being. How to keep Europe on the SustainabilityTrack." The panel series is hosted by three Members of the European Parliament: Rebecca Harms, Jo Leinen, and Sirpa Pietikäinen. At a first meeting in the middle of January participants had discussed the need to go beyond the current GDP-related growth paradigm and to develop a more comprehensive and sustainable understanding in which ways future economic models should contribute to human well-being. Taking this debate as a starting point the second panel focused on most recent tools and indicators to define and measure the well-being of societies.

Wanted: Progress toward a peaceful neighborhood

The meeting that took place in 1995 was an ambitious one: At the invitation of the Bertelsmann Stiftung, parties to the Middle East's various conflicts sat down together to map out a peaceful future for the region and to develop a strategy for creating a trans-Mediterranean partnership. Held in an idyllic town in the foothills of the Taunus Mountains near Frankfurt, the meeting 15 years ago was the initial event in what has since become known as the Kronberg Talks.

Release of the first Policy Report: The Economy at a Crossroads

In economic terms, the Black Sea region has witnessed significant changes over the past two decades. After a tumultuous early 1990s, the Black Sea region as a whole stabilized. The post-2000 period saw sustained high levels of growth that transformed economic and social structures. But the 2008 financial crisis stopped short the period of high growth. National economies have been hobbled by the frozen financial markets, the decline of international demand and slumping commodity prices. Panayiotis Gavras, co-Head of the Policy and Strategy Department of the Black Sea Trade and Development Bank (BSTDB) in Thessaloniki, is the author of the first of four policy reports presented by the Commission on the Black Sea. Gavras examines within his paper the transformation of the economies of the Black Sea countries, specifies the implications of the global crisis for the Black Sea region and formulates policy recommendations against the background of the challenges economies in the Black Sea region are facing today.

Ageing and the German Economy

Until now, most studies of how demographics and economics are linked have limited themselves to the ways that changes in a population's overall size influence economic development. Cooperation with the Kremlin
