Better Information, More Participation

Helping patients become players, not just payers

As competition increases in the German healthcare system, a greater focus is being put on what people actually want and need. As a result, the traditional idea of the patient as a passive observer is being replaced by that of an autonomous healthcare consumer. These days, people want to take an active role when it comes to deciding which course of treatment is appropriate and when locating the right doctor or hospital. They are increasingly dissatisfied with health policies that are confusing for non-experts and are concerned for the future of the German healthcare system.

A key prerequisite for participating in the system is information that is easily understood and readily accessible. Patients need independent assessments of the services provided and the quality of treatment, as well as partners who can provide them with reliable answers to their healthcare-related questions. Often it is not easy to for patients to find information from neutral sources that they can use to play a proactive, well-informed role in making the required decisions. This is where the Weisse Liste project can help.

The Bertelsmann Stiftung is also committed to ensuring that decisions determining health policy and the healthcare services provided consistently reflect the interests of patients and other healthcare consumers. The Initiative for High-Quality Healthcare develops approaches that increase transparency within the German healthcare system, explain current issues in detail and increase awareness of effective solutions.
