2001 International Bertelsmann Forum
Europe Without Borders
At the Bertelsmann Stiftung's invitation, the fifth International Bertelsmann Forum met in the Weltsaal at the Foreign Ministry in Berlin. In the off-the-record conference held a few weeks after the Nice Summit, participants debated proposals for urgent problems facing European policy.
Around 50 political and business leaders, including numerous presidents, heads of government and ministers from all over Europe, discussed “Europe without borders—Strategies for shaping the political future.”
Participants included German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, EU Commission President Romano Prodi, German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer, Spanish Prime Minister José Maria Aznar López, French Foreign Minister Hubert Védrine, Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus, former EU Commission President Jacques Delors, Slovenian President Milan Kucan, Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma, German Defense Minister Rudolf Scharping, Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana, former United States Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger, EU Commissioner Günter Verheugen, Polish Foreign Minister Włodzimierz Cimoszewicz, Slovakian Foreign Minister Eduard Kukan, Hungarian Foreign Minister János Martonyi, Bulgarian Foreign Minister Nadezhda Michailova and Croatian Foreign Minister Tonino Picula.
