International Reform Monitor: Social policy, labor market policy, industrial relations
DIW Berlin
The DIW Berlin (German Institute for Economic Research) was originally founded in 1925 as the "Institute for Business Cycle Research". It is now one of the leading economic think tanks in Germany. As an independent non-profit organisation, the DIW is exclusively committed to academic pursuits in the public interest.
The DIW´s main task is to investigate economic processes in Germany and abroad and to support decision-making in politics, economy, and administration. Since its founding, the institute has focussed on business cycle analysis and on prognoses. The analytical tools are theoretical assessment, empirical testing, economic and econometric modelling. The wide range of research covers short-term analysis of economic developments, searching for answers to current economic and fiscal affairs, the long-term projection and evaluation of developments in the global economy and individual sectors alike. Social changes are recorded by the German Socio-Economic Panel (GSOEP), which compiles a periodical representative longitudinal survey of German private households.
The institute is divided into six research departments and one project group: the department of Business Cycles and Forecasting, the department of Economic Structure and Public Sector, the department of Regional Economics and Transportation, the Department of International Economics, the Department of Industry and Technology, the Department of Energy, Raw Material, Environment and the Project Group German Socio-Economic Panel (GSOEP). Research on Social Policy, Labour Market and Industrial Relations issues is done in almost all of these six research departments and the project group of the GSOEP.
The DIW has approximately 200 staff members, half of whom are researchers. More than half of the Institute´s budget is derived from public grants, which the DIW receives as research funding from Berlin and the Federal Government equally. This sum is supplemented by income from projects, research contracts with third parties, trustee memberships, and donations. The total budget amounts to 30 million DM per year.
