International Reform Monitor: Social policy, labor market policy, industrial relations
Institute for Advanced Studies, IHS
The Institute for Advanced Studies (IHS) was founded in 1963 by two prominent Austrians living in exile, the sociologist Paul F. Lazarsfeld and the economist Oscar Morgenstern. The founding was supported by the Ford Foundation, the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education and the City of Vienna. Presently, there are 62 scientific assistants and 28 administrative people working at the IHS, which amounts to a total sum of 90 people.
The Institute for Advanced Studies (IHS) combines theoretical and empirical research in economics and social sciences. Innovative solutions to problems in business and politics are provided by the IHS through the interlocking of scientific theory and practice. The basic idea of the IHS can be expressed in two key words: internationality and interdisciplinarity. The crossing of geographical and interdisciplinary borders characterizes both the post-graduate program and theoretical and empirical research activities at the IHS. Scientific activities include basic research, applied research and post-graduate education at the highest international level. There are four departments at the IHS: Department of Economics and Finance (Eco&Fin), Department of Transition Economics, Department of Sociology and Department of Political Science. Fields of research include capital markets and financial institutions, economic forecasts, education, environment, European integration, health system, international economics, labour market and employment system, migration and nationalism, citizenship status and rights, public finance, science and technology policy, sectoral analysis.
IHS is a private, non-profit organization. At present one-third of the institute's budget is accounted for by commissioned research. The remaining funding is provided by subsidies from the Federal Ministry of Science and Transport, Oesterreichische Nationalbank, the City of Vienna and other institutions.
The governing body of the Institute is the Board of Trustees, composed of important individuals from politics, science and the economy. The Board of Trustees is elected by the Board of Governors for a four year term. The Scientific Advisory Board provides advice to the Institute on academic questions
