Engaging Citizens in Governance
With our Engaging Citizens in Governance project, we want to help shift the paradigm in German politics by including the public early on in decision-making processes. It’s an approach through which policymakers, government agencies and the public will all benefit.
Our goal is to apply the knowledge gained from the 2011 Reinhard Mohn Prize by working with policymakers and other public-sector partners to develop and implement innovative methods for increasing citizen engagement in Germany’s political processes. A number of projects will be carried out that have been specifically designed to get the general public more involved in a range of policymaking areas, such as infrastructure, healthcare and sustainability issues.

New Publication "Case Study: School Reform in Hamburg"
Efforts to reform Hamburg's school system between 2008 and 2010 triggered massive opposition among the city-state's residents. A referendum held in 2010 blocked one key reform proposal, which would have seen four-year elementary schools replaced by six-year primary schools. This study analyzes why things came to a referendum and why only some elements of the reform plan succeeded.

New deliberative democracy project launched
"The public is much more reasonable than politicians would like to believe." That is how Tom Campbell, former public official from Seattle, Washington, and an expert on setting up citizen participation initiatives in the United States, sums up his experience. At a recent event in Berlin, Campbell presented new approaches to civic engagement and encouraged participants to experiment with new forms of deliberative democracy.
