Bertelsmann Stiftung: Principles of Good Practice

How we define good practice
The Bertelsmann Stiftung uses the “Principles of Good Practice for Foundations,” adopted by the Bundesverband Deutscher Stiftungen (Association of German Foundations) in 2006, as a guideline for ensuring that its own project work is community-oriented and effective.

Transparency
Bertelsmann Stiftung recognizes transparency as a fundamental part of its social responsibility. It therefore makes available to the public relevant information on its project work and funding.

Custodian of our founding principles
As custodians of the principles upon which the Bertelsmann Stiftung was founded, our employees and governance bodies ensure that these principles are realized in a way that serves the community, and not the foundation’s own self-interest. They are therefore obliged to avoid and disclose any potential conflicts of interest between the Bertelsmann Stiftung’s founding principles and those of the parties involved in carrying out the foundation’s project work.

Effective organization and administration
In 2004, the Bertelsmann Stiftung adopted a resolution stating that members of its executive and advisory bodies may not be responsible for bodies dedicated to operational activities. The sole exception is Liz Mohn, who holds positions in the Bertelsmann Stiftung Executive Board and the Board of Trustees, reflecting her position as successor to the Bertelsmann Stiftung’s founder, Reinhard Mohn. She carries out her duties in both bodies in accordance with Germany’s prevailing foundation and tax laws.
