Adopt a School

Education reform in New York

The Bertelsmann Partnership for Education is a joint initiative of the Bertelsmann Stiftung, Random House, BMG, G+J USA and Arvato. It consists of four projects, some of which Bertelsmann has been conducting for over ten years at public schools in New York City, site of the company’s US headquarters.

Adopt-A-School: In this initiative, launched by New York–based Bertelsmann Publishers in 1991, employees volunteer to read to elementary school children, many of whom don’t have access to books at home. Adopt-A-School also donates books and organizes readings by authors.

Media Workshop New York: In 1994, the Bertelsmann Stiftung established this institute for continuing teacher education, school-related consulting and curriculum development. The workshop employs a student-centered, learning-oriented, team-based approach to integrating new media and technologies into the classroom. The Bertelsmann Stiftung is currently seeking a partner to continue the project.

Partner Schools: Since 1997, these programs have been cooperating extensively with four schools selected in a rigorous application process. Each partnership ran for three years.

Innovative Educator of the Year − Awarding Excellence in the 21st Century Classroom: This prize recognized outstanding classroom educators in New York City public schools for substantial, sustainable innovative uses of new media and technology in their classrooms. The award was presented in March 2003.
