effectAction! (mitWirkung!) – An initiative promoting political participation and civic engagement among children and young people
As part of the project’s initial module, civic engagement programs for young people in a number of localities are being examined in order to determine which factors are necessary if children and adolescents are to get involved in their communities. Researchers from the University of Zurich are currently interviewing students between the ages of 12 and 18, along with teachers and school administrators from 800 schools in 51 cities and towns throughout Germany. The researchers are also querying local-level representatives from each of the participating communities. The resulting data will be used to revisit current approaches and to design new strategies. The study’s findings will be made available at the end of 2005.
In a second step, results from the comparative study will be used to develop and implement new initiatives for youth participation, with real-world applications being carried out in close cooperation with communities throughout Germany. Following that, the Bertelsmann Stiftung will collate the results and formulate them as concrete recommendations before presenting them nationally. The recommendations will be designed to provide local organizations and policymakers at the national, state and local levels with the answers to key questions such as: How can processes for promoting participation be initiated? Which assessment tools are the most effective? What is the best way to implement reform?
