Equitable Schools High-Performing Students

The Bertelsmann Stiftung is convinced that performance and equality are not mutually exclusive educational goals. The international PISA studies have shown that children can do well in school regardless of social background. Germany’s educational system thus faces the challenge of dealing with the country’s increasing heterogeneity and the range of aptitudes, cultural affiliations and living situations found among its schoolchildren. In order to improve outcomes and promote educational equality, every child must receive individualized attention.

Heterogeneity and Education

Heterogeneity is an everyday reality. Beyond its traditional mandate, Germany’s educational system faces the additional challenges of dealing with cultural diversity and the wide range of student backgrounds and aptitudes. Unfortunately, the country’s school system has yet to offer its increasingly diverse youngsters equal educational opportunities, and the chances of succeeding in school thus remain dependent on social background. The Bertelsmann Stiftung is therefore dedicated to supporting schools as they help students achieve their full potential, regardless of socioeconomic or cultural factors. Ultimately, approaches that look at each child’s individual situation are the key to creating an equitable, high-quality educational system capable of increasing social integration and participation.

2008 Carl Bertelsmann Prize

In awarding the 2008 Carl Bertelsmann  Prize, the Bertelsmann Stiftung carried out an international search to identify best practices meant to give children from immigrant families access to equal educational opportunities, thereby facilitating their social integration.
