Soprano Eunju Kwon from South Korea is the NEUE STIMME (NEW VOICE) 2009

Eunju Kwon (24) from South Korea is the winner of the 15,000 EUR Grand Prize in the Bertelsmann Stiftung's international NEUE STIMMEN singing competition. The soprano won over the judges, chaired by Dominique Meyer, with her rendition of the arias "No word from Tom" from Igor Stravinsky's opera "The Rake's Progress" and "Eccomi in lieta vesta" from Bellini's "I Capuleti e i Montecchi." Second Prize (10,000 EUR) went to Kihwan Sim (bass), who celebrated his 26th birthday on Oct 30, the day of the semi-finals. Tenor JunHo You (29) came in third, winning 8,000 EUR. More than 1,100 young singers from 63 nations had applied for this year's competition, and 41 young opera talents qualified during world wide preliminary auditions to compete in the final round in Gütersloh.

Seven stunning voices to compete in final

Clearly it wasn’t an easy decision! Originally, six singers were to be chosen to participate in the final round of the 2009 “NEUE STIMMEN” International Singing Competition. Ultimately, seven were chosen -- that’s how good this year’s performers were and how strong their voices. The seven lucky singers were clearly delighted at having been selected from among the hundreds of other contestants to participate in the competition’s final week. Now the tension mounts, as the up-and-coming opera talents prepare to sing two final arias in order to convince the jury that they should take home the top prize.

Twelve participants make the cut to participate in "NEUE STIMMEN" International Singing Competition semifinals

Some 1,140 up-and-coming opera singers from around the globe first auditioned for the "NEUE STIMMEN" International Singing Competition, with 41 invited to continue competing this week in Gütersloh. Of those, 12 have now been chosen to participate in the semifinals on Friday, October 30, 2009. That's when the judges will decide who will take to the stage on Saturday for the final concert in this year's competition.
