School
In an increasingly complex world, education is the key to ensuring that people remain capable, active members of society. The world we live in is becoming increasingly information-based; along with globalization, this is presenting both educational institutions and individuals with new challenges. The Bertelsmann Stiftung is dedicated to ensuring that children, adolescents and adults are all capable of making informed life choices for themselves and of assisting others. As a basis for our efforts, we promote best practices from Germany and abroad which make clear that educational systems can embrace both performance and equal opportunity.
Focus Areas
Equitable schools -- Well-developed students
The Bertelsmann Stiftung is convinced that performance and equality are not mutually exclusive educational goals. The international PISA studies have shown that children can do well in school regardless of social background. Germany's educational system thus faces the challenge of dealing with the country's increasing heterogeneity and the range of aptitudes, cultural affiliations and living situations found among its schoolchildren. Ultimately, schools are social as well as learning venues. In order to improve outcomes and promote educational equality, every child must receive individualized attention, something that demands appropriate organizational attitudes and structures.
moreImproving the Quality of Schools
Germany's schools are undergoing fundamental change. They must respond to new social challenges resulting from global trends, and they must provide students of increasingly diverse backgrounds with the necessary skills for finding their way in our knowledge-based world. The Bertelsmann Stiftung supports the country's states and schools as they strive to improve the quality of the educational experience. It is currently promoting the development of a new culture of teaching and learning, along with new methods of school management. In addition, it assists schools as they determine their own development paths, working with them to create tools for self-evaluation (SEIS). Through these efforts and others, the Bertelsmann Stiftung wants to help Germany develop regionally networked educational landscapes.
