Improving the Quality of Schools
Germany’s schools are undergoing fundamental change. They must respond to new social challenges resulting from global trends, and they must provide students of increasingly diverse backgrounds with the necessary skills for finding their way in our knowledge-based world. The Bertelsmann Stiftung supports the country’s states and schools as they strive to improve the quality of the educational experience. It is currently promoting the development of a new culture of teaching and learning, along with new methods of school management. In addition, it assists schools as they determine their own development paths, working with them to create tools for self-evaluation (SEIS). Through these efforts and others, the Bertelsmann Stiftung wants to help Germany develop regionally networked educational landscapes.

Higher-Quality Education in All Schools
With SEIS (Self-Evaluation in Schools), the Bertelsmann Stiftung has provided all schools in Germany with the possibility of using a tool endorsed by experts and tested in real-world contexts to evaluate their activities and outcomes. In October 2008, the foundation transferred rights for using and further developing the tool to SEIS Deutschland, a consortium of state-level actors.
