Timeline: History of the Bertelsmann Stiftung

The operating foundation -- An effective catalyst for reform

Program of festivities celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Bertelsmann Stiftung

The Bertelsmann Stiftung is Reinhard Mohn’s way of “making things better,” as he used to put it. Mohn’s mission has been a stimulus for change in many areas. The Bertelsmann Stiftung has firmly established itself as a forceful, effective driver of reform in the German political system and society at large.

Not least of all because Mohn was also able to use the foundation to realize his second goal of ensuring long-term continuity at one of the world’s top media concerns.

This chronicle lists key moments in the foundation’s history starting in 1977, including some highlights of the Bertelsmann Stiftung’s efforts to reform German economic, labor and social welfare policies. The examples leave no doubt as to the impact the foundation has had from the beginning.
