State-Level Monitoring

Early access to good education can provide all children with optimal opportunities for personal development and social participation. Yet what is Germany's public childcare and education system doing to achieve this goal in the preschool years? The study "Early Childhood Educational Systems 2008" provides key information on childcare institutions and services in the country's individual states.

Education Quality 0-3

Wach, neugierig, klug: Kinder unter 3 – Ein Medienpaket für Kitas, Tagespflege und Spielgruppen (Alert, Curious and Clever: Children Under Three – A media kit for daycares and other child-care facilities). The Bertelsmann Stiftung has been working together with the State Institute of Early Childhood Education in Munich to adapt the British “Birth to three matters” curriculum. Materials for practical implementation can be ordered from Verlag Bertelsmann Stiftung.

KiTa-Preis (Daycare Prize)

What makes a daycare facility “good”? Both parents and childcare specialists devote a great deal of thought to this question. The “Dreikäsehoch'” (Little Nippers) daycare prize was originally launched to honor and publicize the excellent work being done by early childhood educators throughout Germany, in order that their efforts can serve as examples for the day-to-day efforts of other childcare centers. This year’s prize is entitled “Making the Most of Every Child – Educational Opportunities for Children from Disadvantaged Families” and is addressing the issue of equal opportunity. It will honor programs that have developed outstanding methods of addressing the needs of socially disadvantaged children and their families.

Child & Co

Kind & Ko (Child & Co.) is a community-based pilot project of the Bertelsmann Stiftung and the Heinz Nixdorf Foundation that aims to improve the educational and learning opportunities of children in the first eight years of their lives. New methods are being developed and put to the test in the cities of Paderborn and Chemnitz. The focus is on enhancing daycare facilities as educational institutions, and improving the cooperation between parents and service providers, as well as among all institutions and facilities involved in childcare activities.

Forums organized by the Kinder früher fördern (Early Childhood Education) project focus on improving children’s living and learning situations. We initiate various roundtable discussions with experts and policymakers to drive efforts for developing the entire system for early childhood education, care and child-raising.
