NEUE STIMMEN Master Classes

A number of the young singers taking part in the NEUE STIMMEN International Singing Competition are often still too inexperienced to recognized with a prize. Often the choice of repertoire is not befitting the singer’s vocal development, or presentation and vocal interpretation have not matured yet. Nevertheless, many of the young talents discovered during the competition are capable of development and worthy of support.

The Bertelsmann Stiftung aims to support the careers and personal development of these especially gifted young singers, and to help them prepare for the psychological demands of working in today’s opera world. To this end, the Bertelsmann Stiftung has offered an international series of master classes in the alternating years between the singing competitions (held every other year) since 1997. Up to 15 contestants from the NEUE STIMMEN competition are invited to participate.

During the 10-day course, the young singers work on their voices, musical expression, vocal interpretation and stage presence without the pressure of the competition. The sessions are designed to give singers practical tips for managing their careers and cover issues such as auditions, finding an agent, contracts and tax laws.
