Heterogeneity and Education

Heterogeneity is an everyday reality in Germany, where one elementary schools student in three has a non-German background. Beyond its traditional mandate, Germany’s educational system faces the additional challenges of dealing with cultural diversity and the wide range of student backgrounds and aptitudes. Unfortunately, the country’s school system has yet to offer its increasingly diverse youngsters equal educational opportunities, and the chances of succeeding in school thus remain dependent on social background to a greater extent than in many other countries. The Bertelsmann Stiftung is therefore dedicated to supporting schools as they help students achieve their full potential and participate proactively in society, regardless of socioeconomic  or cultural factors.

Ultimately, activities that look at each child’s individual situation are the key to creating an equitable, high-quality educational system. This, however, is a completely new approach for all participants in Germany’s educational system, and it requires a redefinition of each actor’s position, an expansion of current competencies and more effective forms of cooperation. This paradigm shift can only occur if society joins forces to support the country’s educational actors as they focus on providing every young person with the best possible opportunities for developing to his or her full potential.

The Bertelsmann Stiftung works on the sociopolitical level to generate a consensus on the need for creating a higher-quality educational system that is also more equitable. In terms of school systems, it supports efforts in all of the country’s states to improve the quality of teaching. At the same time, it strives to eliminate the systemic barriers that prevent approaches from being implemented in the classroom that focus on each individual child.
