The Brussels Office of the Bertelsmann Stiftung
The Brussels office of the Bertelsmann Stiftung, one of Europe’s largest private foundations, was established in 2000. The office is located at Schuman, in the heart of the EU district and close to the European institutions.
As a think tank in Europe’s capital, we contribute to the development of an integrated Europe that is built on the values of freedom, humanity and solidarity. The focus of our work is to advance Europe’s potential as a global player in foreign, security, economic and social policy. We analyze worldwide policy approaches and apply lessons learned from them to help Europe realize its vision of a "Union of Member States and Citizens".
The Bertelsmann Stiftung’s Brussels office promotes transnational debate about future challenges facing Europe and its citizens. We provide European institutions, think tanks and media with key findings of our project work. Our work is based on the early detection of upcoming international developments that impact Europe and influence the Stiftung's worldwide agenda.

Brussels Think Tank Dialogue 2013: EU future debate requires clear targets
The foreseeable change in the European Treaties provides think tanks with the opportunity to actively shape the future of the European Union. During the opening of the Brussels Think Tank Dialogue 2013, the Chairman of the Bertelsmann Stiftung, Aart De Geus, emphasised, “The next European Convention will, in two or three years, provide the think tanks with the opportunity to participate in the debate of the future of Europe”. The Brussels office of the Bertelsmann Stiftung had organised the high-level event – at which the President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso and the President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy, among others, participated – together with BRUEGEL, the Centre For European Policy Studies (CEPS), Confrontations Europe, the Egmont Institute, the European Policy Centre (EPC), Friends of Europe -Les amis de l’Europe, the Institut français des relations internationales (Ifri), Madariaga – the College of Europe Foundation, and the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP).

Older Workers - Outlook and Opportunities
On 6 December 2012 the Bertelsmann Stiftung and the European Policy Centre (EPC) presented the findings of their joint venture project „Creating Second Career Labour Markets – Towards more Employment Opportunities for Older Workers“ to the public and policy makers. In the framework of this high level conference a series of policy recommendations, aiming at a better labour market inclusion of older workers, was put to debate amongst a distinguished panel of experts.

Thinking in terms of national sovereignty hampers sustainable Euro crisis resolution
On 15 October the Brussels Office teamed up with the European Trade Union Institute ETUI and the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung for the presentation of a joint publication, “Macroeconomic imbalances and comparative advantages in the Euro Area,” a study by Professor Stefan Collignon of the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna in Pisa. Only three days before the autumn summit of the EU heads of state and government in Brussels at which Herman Van Rompuy, the President of the European Council, presented an interim report on the achievement of a genuine economic and monetary union, Collignon talked to more than a hundred attendees about his far-reaching proposals for a sustainable resolution of the euro crisis.

Corruption slows growth in Europe
EU member states must make a vigorous effort to fight corruption if they want to find a way out of the current crisis. That is one of the findings of a study carried out by the Berlin-based Hertie School of Governance. The study was presented to the European Parliament on April 9, 2013, by Hertie researchers and experts from the Bertelsmann Stiftung.

EU Reform Needs Civil Society
The European Union must draw the right lessons from the euro crisis and the flaws in the Treaty of Lisbon. That is why the EU reforms now in the pipeline need to be speeded up and made more acceptable. These were some of the demands made by the participants at the “Conference on the Future Development of the European Union” in Brussels.
