Bertelsmann Foundation

The Bertelsmann Foundation is a private independent foundation. It is an exclusively non-profit making organisation It was established in 1977 by Reinhard Mohn, owner of the Bertelsmann Corporation. In 1993, he transferred a total of 68.8 percent of the capital shares in the Bertelsmann Corporation as non-voting shares to the Bertelsmann Foundation. The Bertelsmann Foundation's annual budget amounted to 34 million € in 1998/99.

The Bertelsmann Foundation strives to contribute to the solution of current social problems. Its current 150 projects are practice-oriented serving as models and examples becauese experience shows that theoretical analysis and empirical research alone do not transmit lasting evolutionary impulses. The Foundation conceives and initiates the projects pursued or actively accompanies them from inception to their practical realization, while working closely with competent partners from scientific institutions, government or private institutions.

The Foundation has a staff of 210, 85 of whom are researchers, currently working on 150 projects. The Bertelsmann Foundation presently concentrates its efforts in the following areas: economy, government and administration, media, politics, public libraries, medicine and health services, cultural activities, foundations and higher education.
