The government of the Balearic Islands has recognized Liz and Reinhard Mohn for their commitment to promoting culture. On March 1, 2010, Liz Mohn accepted the Gold Medal of the Balearic Islands from Francesc Antich i Oliver, president of the islands, before an audience of 1,500.

The Mohns received the prize for establishing the Can Torró library in Alcudia and for their efforts to promote reading in Spain. Can Torró was created in 1989 by the Bertelsmann Stiftung and the municipality of Alcudia, based on the municipal library in the city of Gütersloh, Germany, where the Bertelsmann Stiftung is headquartered. The Bertelsmann Stiftung contributed more than €1 million to the library’s construction and operations.

In addition, since founding the Fundación Bertelsmann in 1995, it has expanded its cultural and sociopolitical activities in Spain. Originally dedicated to promoting the use of libraries throughout Spain, the Fundación Bertelsmann, based in Barcelona, is now engaged in activities in a number of other fields, including the establishment of community foundations across the Iberian peninsula.
