Prof. Werner J. Bauer, 60, executive vice-president of Nestlé SA, has been appointed the new chair of the Bertelsmann Stiftung Board of Trustees, the foundation’s supervisory and controlling body. He will be taking over the position relinquished by Prof. Dieter H. Vogel, 70, who is leaving the post having reached the retirement age mandated by the foundation’s articles of incorporation. Bauer has been a member of the Board of Trustees since March 2003.

As executive vice-president of Nestlé SA, Bauer is responsible for the areas of innovation, technology, research and development. He began his career in academia, where he served as professor of chemical engineering at Hamburg’s University of Technology and director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Food Technology in Munich, among other posts. In 1992 he became deputy chair of the Advisory Council of the German Stroke Foundation.

“Werner J. Bauer has been one of the Bertelsmann Stiftung’s most trusted advisors for years,” said Liz Mohn, vice-chair of the Bertelsmann Stiftung Board of Trustees. “He brings all of the necessary requirements to his new position: extensive international experience in business and academia and a keen awareness of global and social challenges.”

Having first joined the Board of Trustees in 2003, Vogel was appointed chair on August 1, 2007, by Reinhard Mohn, founder of the Bertelsmann Stiftung. “Dieter H. Vogel has had a major influence on the Bertelsmann Stiftung’s work in his time helping lead the foundation,” said Liz Mohn. “I would therefore like to thank him wholeheartedly on behalf of the Bertelsmann Stiftung’s Board of Trustees and its Executive Board. I am pleased that he will continue to be part of the Bertelsmann team in his role as member of the board at the Bertelsmann Verwaltungsgesellschaft.”

Other members of the Board of Trustees include: Wolf Bauer, chief executive officer of UFA Film & TV Produktion; Dr. Wulf H. Bernotat, former chair of the Board of Management of E.ON AG; Christoph Mohn, chairman and CEO of the Reinhard Mohn Stiftung; Eduardo Montes, president of the Asociación Española de la Industria Eléctrica (UNESA); Prof. Elisabeth Pott, director of the German Federal Center for Health Education; Prof. Thomas Rauschenbach, director and CEO of the German Youth Institute; Rolf Schmidt-Holtz, chairman of the Supervisory Board of Just Software AG; Dr. Wolfgang Schüssel, former chancellor of the Republic of Austria; and Klaus-Peter Siegloch, president of the Bundesverband der Deutschen Luftverkehrswirtschaft (BDL).
